On Saturday, May 2, around 11:30 AM, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman laid the foundation stone and inaugurated the Surma River Bank Development Project in the Chandnighat area of Sylhet city.

Through this project, being implemented at an estimated cost of nearly Tk 4,635 crore, beautification, walking paths (walkways), green spaces, and modern flood-protection infrastructure will be developed on both banks of the Surma River.

During the inaugural ceremony, the Prime Minister inquired about the project’s progress and plans, and instructed that the work be completed within the stipulated time while maintaining quality.

Sylhet City Corporation stated that upon the project’s implementation, new recreational and commuting facilities would be created for city dwellers, in addition to reducing river erosion and waterlogging. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister’s wife, Zubaida Rahman, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Minister of Labour and Expatriates’ Welfare Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Qayyum Chowdhury, as well as various administrative and political personalities.
