The University of South Florida (USF) authorities have decided to award posthumous doctorate degrees to Jamil Ahmed Lymon and Nahida Sultana Brishti, PhD students who were victims of a brutal murder in the United States.

The university’s spring commencement ceremony will be held on May 9. This honor will be officially conferred at that event. On Tuesday (May 5), USF authorities informed the Miami Bangladesh Consulate about the matter via letter and requested a representative from the victims’ families to be present.

It is learned that Jamil Lymon was pursuing a PhD in the Geography, Environment, and Policy Department at USF, while Nahida Sultana Brishti was engaged in doctoral research in Chemical Engineering.

Meanwhile, Brishti’s body is scheduled to be sent back to the country on May 7 and is expected to arrive in Dhaka on the morning of May 9 via Dubai. Earlier, Lymon’s body reached his ancestral home on the afternoon of May 4.

Lymon went missing on April 16. Brishti also disappeared at the same time. After losing contact with them, their families contacted local police.

Subsequently, Lymon’s roommate, US citizen Hisham Abugharbah, was arrested from his family home on suspicion of involvement in the incident. After interrogation, Lymon’s mutilated body was recovered from a garbage bag in the Howard Frankland Bridge area on April 24, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The accused has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the incident.
